Museum Program Conformity

Conforming to the requirements of the Maine Learning Results has presented quite a challenge for educators. Revamping curriculums is never an easy task. The programs at the Cole Land Transportation Museum address many of these requirements. We are the largest collection of land transportation vehicles and equipment devoted to one state's history in the United States. Since everything in the museum was either manufactured or used in Maine, we not only display the old vehicles, we talk about the people who used them, how they were used, and in what areas of Maine they operated.

The study of transportation often involves many other areas of social studies. In the case of the automobile, it was the cause of major economic and social change throughout history. Many advances in society occurred on the heels of advances in transportation technology. For example, the westward movement after the completion of the trans continental railroad or the major population shifts due to the automobile and the inter-state highway system. Tours of the museum provide students with concrete examples of these concepts.
