A. Position Summary

The Education Coordinator serves as the leader of the Museum’s educational programming, with primary responsibility for developing, coordinating, and facilitating engaging, curriculum-aligned learning experiences for students in grades K–12. This role focuses on building strong relationships with schools, expanding access to field trip opportunities, and ensuring that all programs remain relevant, dynamic, and aligned with Maine state curriculum standards.

The Education Coordinator will utilize the Museum’s artifacts, stories, and themes as a platform to inspire learning in history, literacy, and STEM-related concepts. In addition, this role will support Foundation initiatives related to education and literacy.

A small portion of this position includes assisting with basic artifact and exhibit care. These responsibilities are secondary in nature and will be trained, with a focus on maintaining the integrity and presentation of the Museum’s collection as it relates to educational use.

This position is ideal for an experienced educator seeking to transition out of the traditional classroom while continuing to make a meaningful impact in student learning.

B. Duties and Responsibilities

1. Education Program Leadership

a. Coordinate and facilitate all Museum educational programs for grades K–12.

b. Serve as the primary point of contact for schools, teachers, and group leaders scheduling field trips.

c. Build and maintain relationships with local and regional schools to expand participation.

d. Ensure all programs align with Maine state curriculum standards and educational best practices.

e. Adapt and evolve existing programs to remain engaging, relevant, and impactful.

f. Develop new educational offerings that incorporate history, literacy, and STEM concepts.

g. Lead student groups through structured educational experiences within the Museum.

2. Program Development and Curriculum Alignment

a. Maintain and update all educational materials associated with student programs.

b. Integrate hands-on, inquiry-based learning opportunities into programming.

c. Collaborate with staff to incorporate Museum artifacts into educational storytelling.

d. Evaluate program effectiveness and implement improvements based on feedback and outcomes.

3. School and Community Engagement

a. Proactively outreach to schools and educators to promote field trip opportunities.

b. Assist with school scheduling, coordinating field trip dates, program selection, and logistical details.

c. Assist teachers in planning meaningful and curriculum-connected visits.

d. Support accessibility efforts, including participation in transportation assistance initiatives when applicable.

e. Represent the Museum in educational partnerships and community collaborations.

4. Foundation Education and Literacy Support

a. Assist with Foundation initiatives related to education, literacy, and youth engagement.

b. Contribute to the development of educational resources, publications, and literacy-based projects.

c. Support programs that extend beyond the Museum to serve broader community needs.

5. Curatorial and Exhibit Support

a. Assist with basic artifact care and exhibit upkeep as it relates to educational use.

b. Observe and report any issues related to artifact condition or exhibit presentation.

c. Support exhibit updates or adjustments that enhance educational programming.

d. Participate in training related to collection care and handling procedures.

6. General Responsibilities

a. Assist with tours and public programs as needed.

b. Contribute to written materials for educational and promotional use.

c. Support day-to-day Museum operations when required.

d. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

C. QUALIFICATIONS / EXPECTATIONS

1. Bachelor’s degree required in Education or related field.

2. Five to seven years of teaching experience required, preferably in a K–12 classroom setting.

3. Preference for candidates with classroom teaching background seeking transition to an alternative education environment.

4. Demonstrated ability to engage and manage groups of students across multiple age levels.

5. Strong understanding of curriculum development and alignment with educational standards.

6. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

7. Ability to build relationships with educators, schools, and community partners.

8. Highly organized with strong planning and coordination skills.

9. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and take initiative.

10. Comfortable working in a hands-on, interactive museum environment.

11. Willingness to learn basic artifact handling and exhibit care practices.

12. Strong alignment with the mission and values of the Foundation.
